Background and ReleaseEdit
The song came out on October 9, 2016 along with the album, and was released as a single on May 3, 2016.
On July 18, 2017, Melanie Martinez posted a picture with a caption "Cry Baby's gonna kill you soon". This led fans to speculating Melanie Martinez might be working on a violent album, changing Cry Baby to a strong woman. On July 22, the remix came out. Melanie's vocals are present in the second verse, the bridge, and background vocals served by her can be heard in the last chorus. The lyrics of the second verse are completely different to the original.
A special video for the remix was released on July 30, 2016. It features additional scenes containing Melanie Martinez. In the video, she can be seen crying so hard that she kills her haters with tears. As of November 30, 2016, it has got 17.8 million views.
Many fans noted that the new music video had been recorded near a greenscreen, therefore Melanie's tears looked like dots.
The remix peaked at number 197 on the US iTunes chart for 4 minutes.
- Selena Gomez said she hated that remix and the only reason she agreed to do it was because her label forced her to record a remix of her song.
- Melanie Martinez said "I've always wanted to collaborate with Selena Gomez! She's been my biggest idol for years. I still listen to 'Year Without Rain' and it was my main influence to write tons of songs for my first album, but the rest of her songs sucked!". Selena was not happy to hear this and she commented on that very Tweet, 'ur music sucks as well'. Melanie responded with a GIF on her Twitter that said, 'no T no shade, all T all shade'.
- Later, on August 5, Selena Gomez said "I'll never collaborate with Melanie Martinez again.".
- Melanie Martinez had eaten butter before recording the remix.
